AN ELEPHANT that spent three years in a detox programme in Hainan, China, has finally been allowed to go home.
The elephant, known as Big Boy, had been fed heroin-laced bananas by animal smugglers so that he could be easily controlled.
When authorities first found Big Boy they noticed his strange behaviour and he was eventually diagnosed as suffering from heroin withdrawal.
Big Boy was given methadone injections in the detox programme to help cure him of his dependency and, after three years of treatment, he has finally been declared healthy enough to be transferred to a wildlife reserve in southwest China.
