EU demands end to VAT on IA – Update

DECO PORTUGAL’S consumer rights group will decide how best to defend consumer rights after having told the Portuguese government it must reimburse consumers, with interest, who have paid tax on their vehicles twice.

This initiative has been taken after the European Commission warned the government that if it continued to charge tax twice on vehicles it would be taken to the Court of Justice.

Both DECO and other organisations that represent drivers such as the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) were inundated with calls on July 5 about the IVA, VAT charged on the Imposto sobre Veículos, car tax.

Jorge Morgado, general secretary of DECO said on July 4 “if the government obeys with the law, consumers should be reimbursed with interest, by giving justification to the Direcção-Geral de Impostos, tax office”.

He also added that the least the government can do is obey with the law from now on, because if it does not then they may take the government to court, a very long process.
