July was the worst month ever recorded for forest fires in Europe, with a total of 3,376 square kilometres burned.
The European Commission said that the area burnt in July alone was equal to the whole of 2006 and that the second week of July saw a strong increase of fires in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Italy.
These figures do not even include the huge fires which tore through much of the Canary Island recently.
