F-16 fighter jets sold to Romania

Rationalisation measures in the Portuguese Armed Forces were behind the sale of 12 F-16 fighter jets to Romania in a deal that resulted in €78 million for Portugal.

According to TSF radio, Portugal had intended to sell the jets for many years but only now closed the deal with Romania, having the USA as a strategic partner in the agreement.

In July, the Council of Ministers had announced the government’s intention to sell the aircraft, and at the time Bulgaria and Pakistan were two other countries interested in closing a deal with Portugal.

Before handing over the fleet, Portugal has yet to adapt and modernise the craft according to conditions imposed by the Romanians.

The contract also foresees the training of pilots and technicians as well as the maintenance of equipment and the installation of some software, reported TSF.

At least a third of these services will be carried out exclusively by Portuguese companies, with expenses shared between Portugal (€108 million) and Romania (€186 million). Financial gains for Portugal amount to €78 million.

As the original suppliers to Portugal, the USA was a vital partner in the deal, giving its seal of approval and supplying three F-16 shells required for the craft modernisation.

Portugal currently has 39 F-16 fighting falcons.
