Two members of a gang, suspected of numerous muggings and robberies in the Lagos region, have been arrested by police after they terrified a 73-year-old woman in her home in Barão de S. João and ripped off a gold necklace she was wearing.
Neighbours who heard the screams of the victim as she fell to the floor tried unsuccessfully to prevent the two men from making their getaway in a red BMW car, which was later intercepted in Lagos by the GNR who recovered the stolen necklace.
They had gained access to the woman’s house by pretending to make an inquiry about an acquaintance they said lived nearby.
The detained duo are believed to be part of an organised gang responsible for a number of similar crimes in the Lagos area, including the recent mugging of a 29 year-old German tourist.
