Breaking news this evening is that GNR traffic police have mounted a motorway version of ‘Operation Stop’, diverting southbound traffic on the A1 motorway to a service station near Santarém where cars are being ‘checked’. For the time being, the exercise has simply been described as a ‘mega checking operation”, due to stay in place until midnight. Traffic brigade operations of this kind are rarely carried out on motorways.
