TWO POLAR bears who live at the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Japan are causing concerns to visitors because their fur has turned green.
This colour change happened in July after the bears swam in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.
Zoo official Masami Kurobe said that visitors have asked whether the animals are sick or carrying mould.
High temperatures in July and August and less-frequent water changes because of the zoo’s conservation efforts have caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat, but the bears are expected to return to normal when the algae growth subsides in November.
