A motorist mowed down a cyclist and drove away from the scene of the accident leaving the rider’s dead body at the side of the road.
The victim’s corpse was found by a GNR police patrol last Thursday on the EN125 near Algarve Shopping Centre in Guia, Albufeira shortly after the accident happened.
A few metres away was the badly damaged cycle which had been run over by the car.
It is believed that visibility on the road was impaired by rain and the cyclist, a 41-year-old Indian man, was riding in the darkness without rear lights or reflectors.
The criminal investigation department of the GNR found evidence at the accident spot that the car was red but this is the only clue they have as to the identity of the vehicle or the driver.
