SIX HOSPITALS are to close in Lisbon by 2012 and services transferred to the new super hospital at Todos-os-Santos in Chelas.
The hospitals are Capuchos, Santa Marta, São José, Estefânia and Desterro. Lisbon’s oncology hospital, the Instituto Português de Oncologia (IPO), is likely to move to Oeiras.
The Ministry of Health’s decision forms part of the largest shake-up in hospital treatment in the past 30 years. The ministry’s aim is to place hospitals nearer concentrations of population as the centre of Lisbon has seen a decline in inhabitants in the past few decades.
