LISBON’S QUINTA das Conchas park and housing estate, in the city’s northern Lumiar district, was officially inaugurated last month. Lisbon Câmara President, Pedro Santana Lopes, and vice president, Carmona Rodrigues, were on hand for the unveiling ceremony.

This was the first phase completed in the re-development project of land between the Parque das Nações and Lisbon’s Portela airport. The overall project will culminate at the beginning of 2006 with the opening of the Quinta dos Lilases estate.

The Quinta das Conchas project represents an investment of 6.5 million euros over an area of 24.6 hectares, representing the third largest green space in Lisbon after Monsanto and Bela Vista.

Santana Lopes said Lisbon needed an open green space, where people could relax and walk between the surrounding housing blocks. “Here, people can jog, play football or use the children’s playgrounds close to their own homes, without having to travel the distance to reach the city’s parks,” he said.

The new green open space includes an ornamental lake, paths and walkways, children’s playground facilities and a stage for small shows, music concerts and theatre productions, as well as a restaurant and bar. C.G.
