afpop, Portugal’s largest foreign residents’ association celebrated its Silver Jubilee with a dinner on Saturday, November 10.
It marked the 25th anniversary of the creation of afpop as an association and was attended by 80 members and guests at the Convento de São Francisco in Faro.
The menu, which celebrated two of the Algarve’s most famous ingredients, black pork and bacalhau, was created for the evening by chefs at the Regional Hotel and Catering College and was enjoyed in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere in the historic and beautiful building.
Council President Chris Ireland was pleased to welcome Ivar and Thea Boman, proud owners of membership number three, who had flown from their home in Sweden to be present.
In his speech, Chris acknowledged that around 20,000 people have been members of this association over the years and paid tribute to the efforts of the founding members and all those who have been part of the history of afpop since its early beginnings over a quarter of a century ago.
afpop’s CEO Michael Reeve acknowledged the “outstanding” contribution that the council members and area event organisers have made to the growth and continued success of the association and thanked them, past and present, for their commitment and efforts. He also read messages of congratulation which had been received from people who had been unable to attend the evening, including a message of congratulation from His Excellency the German Ambassador.
The evening formalities were concluded by the British Consul, Clive Jewell, who read a congratulatory message on behalf of Her Excellency the British Ambassador Jill Gallard, who praised the contribution that afpop has made to the expatriate community and the “excellent relationship” between the organisation and the British Embassy and consulates in Portugal.
