A WEEK before the new abortion law becomes effective in Portugal, 12 state owned hospitals in the north of the country have already started to carry out Voluntary Pregnancy Interruption (IVG).
Pressure from women who are less than 10 weeks into their pregnancy and who want to abort is given as the main reason for the hospitals’ decision.
Many doctors, however, are refusing to follow the new abortion law, saying they are conscientious objectors.
As a result some hospitals will not have qualified resources to practice the IVG.
