Less unemployed at job centres

THE NUMBER of unemployed registered at Employment Institute Centres (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional) fell by 12.2 per cent in June compared with the same period in 2006.

It is the sixteenth consecutive month in which unemployment has fallen according to the latest statistics released by the IEFP.

At the end of June there was a total of 388,619 unemployed registered on the ‘job centre’ books, 49,000 less than in the same period last year.

In monthly terms, the number of jobless fell 2.2 per cent in June compared to May. The fall in unemployment was more significant among men (15.7 per cent) than woman (9.6 per cent), although the fall affected all age and class groups.

The IEFP statistics also showed that job seekers looking for their first employment rose by 1570 or 5.5 per cent more in June than in June 2006 and represented six per cent of the total of those out of work.
