AN ONLINE beauty contest for nuns is being organised by an Italian priest to try and fight the stereotype that nuns are old and dour.
Miss Sister 2008 will start in September on a blog run by the Reverend Antonio Rungi. He hopes that nuns from around the world will enter the contest to showcase not only their beauty but also their work for the church.
He said: “We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits but being ugly is not a requirement for being a nun. External beauty is a gift from God and we mustn’t hide it.”
The contest has drawn criticism from Catholic teachers who have said that the contest is an “initiative that belittles the role of nuns”.
