Lisbon in top 50 cities for quality of life

LISBON IS among the top 50 cities in the world offering the best quality of life, according to consultants Mercer HR. Geneva and Zurich topped the index, which included 215 cities worldwide.

The Portuguese capital came in at 47th position with 100.1 points, six points higher than it had in 2006, and in front of New York, which served as a classification base with 100 points.

Trailing immediately behind Lisbon were Milan, Italy and Seattle in the US which scored fractionally under 100 points.

Vienna in Austria was the third best city to live, followed by Düsseldorf in Germany, while the best cities outside Europe were Canada’s Vancouver and Auckland in New Zealand.

In another index by Mercer HR, Lisbon was not among the top 50 most expensive cities in the world to live for expatriates. Topping this was Moscow, for the second year running, followed by London, Seoul and Hong Kong.

This index covered 143 cities across six continents, comparing the cost of more than 200 items including housing, transport, clothing, electrical and domestic goods, and entertainment.

The Mercer Index is one of the main ones used by international companies to determine financial costs and relocation fees for employees sent overseas.

Among the cities which have become more expensive to live over the past 12 months were Madrid and Barcelona, which are both in the top 30 dearest cities.
