Loulé floods leave families homeless

Heavy rain in the early hours of today (Thursday, November 8) led to severe flooding and three families having to be evacuated from their homes in the Algarve.

The most affected area were in the Loulé council, where rain poured heavily between midnight and 3am.

A spokesman from Loulé Câmara has confirmed that 97 incidents had been reported to the civil protection teams in the areas of Almancil, Quarteira and Vilamoura.

Loulé Mayor, Seruca Emídio, said this morning that various Bombeiros teams were pumping out water from several affected houses and shops. “Only later today will it be possible to assess the damage caused by the heavy rain,” he said.

It is reported that 12 people have been left homeless because of the immense damage caused by the floods – six people were taken to the Quarteira Bombeiros Headquarters for shelter, four were taken in by relatives and neighbours, and two bed-ridden residents were taken to Loulé Health Centre.

The road connecting Almancil and Quarteira had to be cut off last night because of the rain but traffic has returned to normal now.

The railway line in the area of Vale Jude also had to be cut off due to land subsidence.
