Olhão markets are to be given the status of monument of public interest, following an announcement in the online government publication Diário da República this week.
The decision follows a public consultation period which went uncontested. Olhão Câmara says the Monumento de Interesse Público (MIP) classification is “a prize for the city, particularly as the markets underwent a €2.5 million redevelopment project in 1998”. “The markets form a set of buildings of great architectural and historical value,” said António Pina, culture councillor.
