Lagos Câmara has recently approved its proposed Municipal Master Plan (PDM) which had been suspended since 2002.
Describing a series of guidelines to ensure the efficient development of the council, the proposed PDM is now awaiting the final approval of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR).
As well as aspects related to urban development, which foresee, for example, the creation of a tourism and leisure cluster in the Lagos, Meia Praia and D. Ana areas, the proposed PDM is also focusing on primary industries, such as fishing and agriculture.
Lagos Câmara said: “It’s ever more important to develop the primary sectors, particularly fishing which is in decline, but also agriculture through the development of irrigation crops, polyculture and biological farming.”
The potential of nautical recreational activities for the future of the council’s tourism industry is also covered in the proposed PDM.
The rehabilitation of the Lagos historic centre and the creation of a sports internships centre for the city are also in the plans.
“The objective of the PDM is to achieve land planning policies – according to PROTAL (Algarve Land Planning Master Plan) guidelines – that will reinforce the image of Lagos as an innovative and competitive council, socially cohesive, culturally and scientifically active and in line with its historic and maritime tradition,” said the câmara.
