Ângela Abreu, 37, a research scientist at the University of Minho’s Biological Engineering Centre, has been honoured by US space agency NASA, as well as Europe’s space agency ESA, for her discovery of a ‘green’ process for creating hydrogen.
Up until Abreu’s research, hydrogen had only been created through the use of fossil fuels. This new process, using effluent and organic waste, is 100% green and opens the door to environmentally-sustainable possibilities.
The young scientist’s work has also seen her given a grant from the Luso-American Development Foundation, which will cover all travelling expenses related to her investigations into the coming year.
