New bridge opened

A NEW 14 million euro drawbridge, the fourth largest in the world, has been opened at the Port of Leixões on the river Leça near Matosinhos (near Porto).

Despite several setbacks and delays, the project was completed in record time: in six months, the old 47-year-old bridge was dismantled and a new one built in its place.

The bridge will serve to improve navigation in the Port of Leixões as well as improving traffic and pedestrian flow over the Leça between the two sides of the town.

The 92 metre long bridge will also allow an increase in the navigable width of the canal from 59 metres to 77.5 metres.

This, in turn, means that it will allow larger and greater capacity ships to enter the canal to load and unload at the port.
