New citizens shops ‘worry’ government

The forward-thinking idea of regional development minister Miguel Poiares Maduro to create a new form of Citizens’ Shop in CTT post offices is causing unease in certain government circles.

Público newspaper reports today that the Ministries of Justice and Internal Administation are worried that people will use the outlets to check up on private information on other citizens, as well as company records.

Secretary of State Pedro Cardoso da Costa has guaranteed there will be no conflicts of interest, but he’s still not saying exactly how the new services – due to start working in the New Year – will be structured.

Concerns centre on the fact that these new outlets will no longer be under state control – given that CTT is being privatised.
Current “Lojas do Cidadão” issue passports and identity cards – but these new spaces are unlikely to offer this service.

According to Público, Poiares is planning for 1,000 new Citizens’ Shops to run both in post offices and municipal buildings, with the idea of bringing online services closer to people, with the help and guidance of CTT staff.
