New French words to replace English buzz words

France has taken one more step to stop the invasion of English words in the French language by creating new ones to replace general Anglicisms.

A government agency announced the results of a competition among students to come up with French replacements for words such as ‘chat’, ‘talk’, ‘newsletter’, ‘tuning’ and ‘buzz’.

The final list will now be considered for entry in the French dictionary.

The exercise has become an annual event and a symbol of the determination of the French government to avoid the encroachment of English buzz words.

The report said the suggested replacements included ramdam for ‘buzz’, bolidage for ‘tuning’, débat for ‘talk’, and éblabla or tchatche for ‘chat’, currently used in the context of online conversations. For ‘newsletter’, infolettre was among several other options.
