New university centre for medical students

Work on the new centre for medical students at the University of the Algarve will be starting next month. The new building will boost the number of specialities offered in the integrated Master’s in Medicine and is expected to be up and running within the next two to three years.

João Guerreiro, outgoing rector of the university, told Sul informação that the project will cost roughly €3 million. Leaving his post after two mandates, Guerreiro considers the building – effectively the ‘missing wing’ to the current Science and Technology building in front of the library on Gambelas campus – as one of his greatest achievements.

“The idea is to give students and teachers other conditions for the course in Medicine, and even the architecture of the building was conceived to adapt itself to the course, which will involve many seminars,” he said.

There will also be spaces for investigation and the ‘incubation of businesses’ coming as spin-offs from students’ research.
