More than 300 guests sat down for dinner at the 98th birthday celebrations of Sporting Clube Olhanense at Ria Shopping in Olhão last week.
Isidoro Sousa, President of Olhanense, spoke of the tremendous achievement in reaching the top flight of Portuguese football.
He went on to say: “It has been a hard first season but we have learnt a lot and our fans have been behind us all the way. Many have travelled to away games that are at least 300kms away. The support means so much to the team. Thank you.”
Isidoro then made a point of thanking the many British and international fans who now support the team both home and away.
Speaking afterwards, he wished to place on record the excellent coverage given by the Algarve Resident newspaper which has helped to swell the foreign contingent to over 200. Presentations were made to manager Jorge Costa, the former FC Porto legend and Portugal international, players, backroom staff and supporters.
A large cheer was reserved for João Paulo Ferreira, who received the Supporter of the Year Award.
João Paulo Ferreira has organised many away trips, including the memorable visit to Madeira to play Marítimo last December
