Municipal Assembly meetings earlier this month in Olhão and Silves voted against the merging or extinction of any of their parishes, as part of a government plan to restructure local administration and cut expenditure. Olhão council has five parish offices: Fuseta, Moncarapacho, Olhão, Pechão and Quelfes. Silves has eight: Alcantarilha, Algoz, Armação de Pêra, Pêra, São Bartolomeu de Messines, São Marcos da Serra, Silves and Tunes. Municipalities had to submit their proposals to Parliament by October 15 (see last week’s Algarve Resident).
