THE AUTHORITY that measures low-lying levels of ozone in the atmosphere issued warnings last week because dangerous levels had been reached in the Lisbon area, and the population living in Lisbon, Sintra, Loures and Odivelas were warned to limit the amount of time they spent outdoors. Ozone is particularly dangerous to people suffering with asthma, bronchitis and other chest complaints. Affecting mucus airways and tracts, high levels of ozone can cause coughing, headaches, chest pains, as well as shortness of breath and eye and throat irritation.
