Social media has exploded with ‘righteous indignation’ today over comments made by parliamentary leader Ferro Rodrigues after last night’s Euro championship game in which Portugal went forwards to the semi-finals, to play Belgium in Seville on Sunday.
His words? He hopes the Portuguese will flock en masse to Seville to support the national team.
Yes, it is ‘odd’ – bearing in mind all the focus on ‘containing the Delta variant’, and doing what we’re told by those in positions of responsibility. But as Mr Rodrigues is a member of government, and he has said he will be going to the game “with the greatest of pleasure” himself, along with President Marcelo, Portuguese citizens – at least the ones free to travel outside their own areas of residence – may feel that they must indeed ‘flock en masse’ to Seville, come what may.
Certainly the uproar over Twitter suggests quite a few have decided Mr Rodrigues just had a very senior moment…
