AN INITIATIVE to care for domestic pets during the holidays and prevent abandonment has been organised for the fifth year by Lisbon Câmara.
The scheme first started in 2003 and is jointly organised by the Departamento de Higiene Urbana e Resíduos Sólidos, the health and sanitation department, and Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos Animais, the Portuguese animal rights association and SOS Animal.
Volunteers care for other people’s domestic pets when they are temporarily away in return for their domestic animals being homed when they are away. Families without pets are also encouraged to volunteer. It is hoped this initiative will reduce the number of abandoned animals during the holiday period.
