SPEEDING FINES in Lisbon could range from between 60 euros and 2,500 euros thanks to a new system of radars which have been installed throughout the city.
After tests, delays and waiting for authorisation, the 21 new speed radars went into operation in the city on Monday (July 16).
The radars work by calculating the speed of vehicles and then taking a photograph of the vehicle in question, recording its license plate.
The data is then sent to the Lisbon Municipal Police which is then responsible for issuing and collecting the fines.
The 21 radars set up by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa are situated: on the second circular, Avenidas das Descobertas, Índia, Cidade do Porto, Brasília, Ceuta, Infante Dom Henriques, Estados Unidos, Gomes da Costa, Gago Coutinho, Campo Grande tunnel, Marques de Pombal and tunnels, Avenida João XXI and the Radial de Benfica.
According to both the police and the Câmara, the number of deaths on the road in Lisbon fell in 2006 and it is expected that the new radars will further reduce road fatalities from speeding.
Since January, in tests, Lisbon speeding radars fired off 455,266 times with some vehicles being caught doing 223 kph.
