Plans to improve the EN125

ALGARVE CÂMARAS have handed in their proposals to central government for improvements along the EN125, which includes plans for widening the road, the construction of new roundabouts and a new bridge.

Most of the proposals contain proposals for more connection roads to be built to and from the EN125 and roundabouts but some Câmaras have decided to ask for larger projects. Manuel da Luz, President of Portimão Câmara, has included the construction of a new bridge over the River Arade in his proposal.

“The old bridge into Portimão can no longer cater for the population on each side of the river,” said a spokesman from Portimão Câmara, who also said that they have asked for the EN125 to be widened between Barlavento Hospital and the knot of Alvor.

Portimão’s proposal also contains projects for the construction of four new roundabouts near Senhora do Verde, Ribeira da Torre, Figueira and Mexilhoeira.

With around 60,000 cars entering Faro each day, José Apolinário, President of Faro Câmara, said: “Our plans include the conclusion of the second phase of the north circular road.” This, he said, will reduce the number of cars within the city.

Less accidents

Tavira Câmara has asked for the government to approve its proposal of widening the EN125, creating an extra lane as well as a joining road, new roundabouts and pedestrian crossings. The widening of the road would include the demolition of several buildings, including houses and commercial businesses.

Macário Correia, President of Tavira Câmara, said: “The plans to renovate the road include the area surrounding it as well as urban planning along an area between 50 to 100 metres,” adding, “when some people step out of their front doors they are on the road and some buildings make crossroads very dangerous.” Owners of the properties would be compensated or re-homed.

Olhão and Lagos Câmaras have both offered proposals for linking roads. Francisco Real, President of Olhão Câmara, said that this will reduce the number of cars entering the city. If plans were approved, Lagos would also gain three new roundabouts in Chinicato, Molião and Espiche as well as a link road between the Modelo and Quatro Estradas. José Inácio, a spokesman from Lagoa Câmara, said that their priority is to reduce the number of accidents on the EN125 as well as constructing two new roundabouts in Porches and two near the International School of the Algarve.

Desidério Silva, President of Albufeira Câmara has proposed for roundabouts to be built in Fontainhas and near the Algarve Shopping Centre in Guia and organised planning of the area between Guia and Ferreiras.
