A team of 10 officers from the coastal control unit of the GNR swooped on a drug smuggling operation on a beach at Carrapateira, Aljezur, on October 17, and seized 675 kilos of hashish with a street value of €3 million.
Seven men, aged between 30 and 40 and residents in the Costa Vicentina, who had tried to collect the parcels as they were being unloaded from a high-speed boat onto a flat beach rock near Zimbreirinho, were arrested on land but the smugglers’ boat made its getaway.
The boat had been detected by special night vision cameras which enable the GNR to detect any suspicious movements at sea during the hours of darkness.
