Police search out ETA bases

THE PORTUGUESE police authorities, Polícia Judiciária and Guarda Nacional Republicana, are working under cover to discover the location of cells belonging to the Basque paramilitary separatist organisation, ETA, in Portugal.

The two groups are paying particular attention to searching out hiding places in tunnels, sewerage drains, abandoned mines, dams, electrical sub-stations, hotels and tourist developments.

The searches are being concentrated in an area from the Santa Clara dam as far as Ourique, Garvão and Baixo Alentejo as well as in the Algarve at places such as Vilamoura, Armação de Pêra, Albufeira and Quarteira.

Various elements of the PJ, PSP and GNR are also operating alongside Spanish police forces in Spain and along the Portuguese frontier with Spain.
