FEWER BABIES are being born in Portugal and, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE), national statistics institute, Portugal will lose a quarter of its population by 2050.
Last year, 4,100 fewer babies were born compared to the year before, putting birth and fertility rates to their lowest ever recorded.
INE reports that since 1987, the number of births has fallen due to women having babies later in life and a decline in fertility.
Since 2005, the age group registering the most pregnancies is 30 to 34.
