Portugal’s social inequality

THE LEADER of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has criticised the government for fuelling obscene fortunes while half of the country is in financial difficulties.

Jerónimo de Sousa said at a rally of communist party faithful last week said that Portugal was the champion when it came to social inequality.

Talking at a grilled sardine barbecue, sardinhada, in Monte Gordo in the Algarve, in advance of the main annual rally Festa do Avante, which runs from September 7 to 9, he said: “Portugal is the champion of social inequality in Europe.”

Obscene fortunes

He added that the government of José Sócrates was “filling the purses of some with really obscene fortunes while the vast majority of the population was living in worse conditions”.

The PCP was referring in particular to an EU report from Brussels which stated that the 100 richest Portuguese controlled and disposed of one quarter of all the wealth generated in Portugal while the rest of the population was requested “to make more sacrifices”.
