Portuguese believe corruption is rising

THE PORTUGUESE believe that corruption is on the increase in the country, according to a new study.

According to a study carried out by the Centre for Investigation and Sociological Studies (Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia) 51.9 per cent of those questioned about the years between 2000 and 2007 believed they were living in a period of increased corruption.

Some 19.8 per cent of those canvassed stated that the period immediately following the April 1974 Revolution until the early 1980s was also extremely corrupt.

The vast majority of those asked believed that anti-corruption drives in Portugal had proved ineffective (83 per cent) while 45 per cent blamed the government for its failure.

When asked ‘what degree of confidence they placed in Portugal’s political parties?’ 48 per cent replied ‘none at all.’
