AN ITALIAN prison in Volterra is diversifying and is now offering special restaurant evenings for local people and the opportunity for those travelling in the area to use the prison as a hotel.

Visitors to the prison are served by inmates, who are in prison for various crimes including homicide.

Although entry into the prison is difficult and visitors must have a background check before being allowed in, the scheme is proving a success with both inmates and guests.

The food is reasonably priced and of a very high standard and the inmates enjoy a change to their daily routine.

The hotel is still in the planning process but the prison director believes it will be as successful as the restaurant evenings.
