An indication of just how lucrative Covid testing is for laboratories everywhere has come in the note that the government has spent more than €218 million in tests performed by private laboratories since March 2020 (to end of July this year). It’s a sum that doubles the amount the health service received from patients in the whole of 2020 – and of course, it is entirely separate from the money pouring in from private people forced to take tests for travel and other purposes.
