Promising start for Olhanense

Peterborough United provided the opposition for Olhanense’s opening pre-season friendly at the José Arcanjo Stadium on Saturday.

In a lively opening 45 minutes, the home side scored through new boy Jorge Gonçalves, a recent signing from V.Guimarães, after just four minutes.

Last season’s top scorer Djalmir then finished off a fine move involving Delson, Fernando Alexandre (Leixões) and Vinicius (Desp.Aves) after half-an-hour.

New manager Daúto Faquirá will have been pleased with his new players, who knitted in well.

A more attacking approach was welcomed by a good crowd who will have been encouraged by this display. The Posh had on display Arron Davies, their latest signing from Nottingham Forest while George Boyd looked sharp.

Boyd has just signed a new three-year deal. Peterborough United manager Gary Johnson, who brought Bristol City to Olhão two years ago, remarked on the high quality of performance by the Algarveans.

Peterborough Director of Football, Barry Fry, who played with George Best at Manchester United and recently featured in an episode of Big Brother as a manager of the Big Brother housemates, was full of praise for the welcome they had received: “We’ve had a wonderful time here in the Algarve. Browns Leisure Complex, Vilamoura, has gone out of its way to accommodate us, and here at Olhanense we’ve been made to feel extremely welcome. The players have worked hard and we look forward to challenging for promotion from Division 1.”
