Public ministry calls for loss of mandate for Porto mayor

The Public Ministry has today requested a suspended jail term for the crime of prevarication for long-running independent Porto mayor Rui Moreira. Prosecutors are also requesting that Mr Moreira lose his mandate. The case, dubbed Selminho, refers to a long-running property wrangle over which Mr Moreira himself has always proclaimed his innocence. A final decision is expected on January 21. This case has been running through the courts for the last eight years, and refers to ‘facts’ that took place 20 years ago.
