A PLAGUE of rats which has affected thousands of hectares of land in large parts of Spain has made its way towards the Portuguese border, near Bragança.
The only thing separating the rats, estimated to number between 400,000 and 750,000, and Portugal is the Douro River.
Portuguese farmers firmly believe that this problem could scale out of control and destroy people’s crops, and in turn livelihood. The invasion also poses a health risk as the rodents could be carrying diseases.
