INFLATION IN Cambodia has pushed the price of rat meat to four times its usual price as other meats become simply too expensive to buy.
Officials in Phnom Penh have said that rats are now fleeing to higher ground because of rising levels of flood waters in the Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to capture the rodents.
Spicy rat dishes made with garlic have become particularly popular not only in Cambodia but also in neighbouring Vietnam.
It is estimated that Cambodia supplies Vietnam with more than a tonne of live rats daily to fulfil food demands.
