Residential robberies

Two residential burglaries have been reported in the Loulé area, informed Safe Communities Algarve (SCA).

The most recent of these, which took place a week ago, was in Sobradinho – Alfeição, when hooded men broke into a house at around 3am.

David Thomas from SCA said: “The occupants  were not injured in the robbery but were clearly frightened. So although overall crime is down (see panel), this is not the time to be complacent.

“Christmas is often a period where there is a seasonal increase in cash crimes and burglaries and we should all do our part by taking commonsense crime prevention measures and report suspicious activities to the police.”

The security expert believes it is very likely that these properties had been “watched” beforehand. He recommends that any suspicious activity should be reported to the GNR by  using the ‘My GNR’ function on the SCA website or by telephoning the GNR Safe Residence team.

Although the figures have not yet been published, both the GNR and PSP report that overall crime has continued to decrease during 2012, informed SCA.

In some areas this has been significant, for example in Lagos where overall crime has decreased by 25%.

David Thomas said: “The reasons for the continuing decreases are considered to be as a result of some excellent investigations and arrests by both the GNR and PSP during the year; enhanced police patrols and special operations and the impact of crime prevention initiatives.”
