Residents say no to demolition of historic grocery store

A petition has been initiated by a group of Aljezur residents who want to protect the Mercearia da Ponte grocery store, in the town centre, from demolition.

According to the petition, Aljezur Câmara has given the owners of the store 30 days to vacate the premises, which is located within a historical building on Rua 25 de Abril. The objective of the câmara, states the petition, is the demolition of the building.

As the owner of the building, it is the legal responsibility of the câmara to proceed with maintenance work on the building, which it says is at “imminent risk of partial collapse”.

So far, states the petition, only two relocation options, “of inferior dimension and lacking a loading/unloading area”, have been presented to the owners of the store by the câmara.

“Nine people could lose their jobs as a result of this decision,” it continued. “The council – local population, tourists and foreign residents – will lose out if this store selling local produce disappears.”
