Algarve retailers association ACRAL (Associação do Comércio e Serviços da Região do Algarve) donated €2,800 last week to the victims of the fierce July blaze in the Serra do Caldeirão.
Working in partnership with Portuguese bank BES, the association raised the money by using 254 piggy banks, which were distributed among its associates in Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Loulé and São Brás de Alportel.
The association then held a ‘piggy bank opening ceremony’ on October 3 at the BES branch in Faro, to count the money raised. Half of the funds were immediately deposited in two different accounts, which were purposely opened by the Tavira and São Brás de Alportel Câmaras.
João Rosado, President of ACRAL, said: “I would like to thank all ACRAL associates who have contributed to this fundraising campaign, which will certainly help rebuild what was lost in the fires.”
