Road deaths

MORE THAN 500 people were killed on Portugal’s roads in the first eight months of this year.

Figures released on Tuesday by the Autoridade Nacional de Segurança Rodoviária, the national authority on road security, showed 551 deaths reported between January and August, more than for the whole of 2006.

However, the statistics, provided by the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) and GNR show a decrease in the number of people injured.

Santarém, with 27 people reported killed in car accidents, and Faro, where 17 people died, were the cities where the numbers showed the biggest increase when compared with 2006.
