Romeo and Juliet with a difference

news: Romeo and Juliet with a difference

Each location needed to feel that it belonged in some way to the rest and this was cleverly done to aid continuity. Fortunately, the school, which was built around an 18th century palace, served its purpose well. There was no need to build a balcony as one was already there. The high up bedroom window was also there and the gardens were cleverly used in this ‘promenade production’. We were ushered from the press conference in the new gym to fights on the patio, to the lovers’ scenes around the palace. Halfway round, a refreshing glass of sparkling wine got the audience into the mood for the music and dance scene that followed. The taking of the two lovers’ lives brought the play to a sad conclusion, as sombre music added to the feel of the tragedy.

This was a polished and professional performance by all involved and will certainly take some beating by the school’s next production. Bob Hughes
