LISBON’S RIVER Tagus estuary was the setting for the colourful EPAL Regatta Trophy over the weekend.
Starting off from Belém Dock, around two dozen sailing boats and yachts lifted anchor for a 21 km race around the estuary on Sunday.
It is the second year that the regatta has been organised and sponsored by water company EPAL, which aims to make the population more aware of the dangers of polluting the river and natural water resources.
“This race serves to bring to the fore various values that EPAL stands for in society such as promoting sensible water consumption, cleaner and non-polluting practises both from industry and individual households,” said EPAL spokesman José Manuel Zenha.
“Our other objective is to promote sports on the River Tagus which don’t pollute the river and sailing is a prime example,” he added.
The regatta attracted 160 participants in a total of 22 boats, including some who went on to accompany the annual World Olympic Class Sailing Championships in Cascais.
The winners were those who managed to pass a determined number of buoys in the river and all the participants had to be amateurs.
The winners were Tuba IV, Carioca, Dom Pedro Hoteis/ Generali and Harsang.
