The Saint Andrew’s Society of the Algarve is a small group of Scots and other nationalities whose main aim is to promote things Scottish, “but also to enjoy ourselves”. This year, the annual ball will actually take place on Saint Andrew’s Day, November 30. Once again, it will be at the Penina Hotel.
The event will begin at 7pm sharp where participants will be greeted by the skirl of the pipes played by piper Malcolm MacGillivray. Following a champagne reception, there will be a grand buffet accompanied by wine, followed by coffee and Atholl Brose.
Afterwards, Scottish dancing will be to the accompaniment of the ever-present ceilidh band from Scotland, The Sound of Islay. Each dance will be talked and walked through beforehand, so there is no need for beginners to hang back!
The event is “a great opportunity to get out your glad rags and have a great time”, say Doug McAdam, Chieftain.
Tickets will cost €45 for Society members and €47.50 for non-members. Special hotel and golf rates are available for ball participants. Book through the hotel (282 420 200) by mentioning that you are part of the Saint Andrew’s Group.

Another date for the diary will be the 2020 Burns Supper which will be on Saturday, January 25 (the Bard’s birthday) at the Ponte Romana Restaurant in Silves.
