Lisbon Zoo is to participate in the European Campaign of Protection of Turtles, a project promoted internationally by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo is one of the 290 members of this association that is committed to save turtles from extinction.
Sea and land turtles are now an endangered species throughout the world. The destruction of their natural habitat, China’s strong turtle trade with neighbouring countries, pollution, the growing numbers of egg collectors and the search for turtle meat for consumption are just some of the reasons for their dwindling numbers.
Globally, the campaign aims to stimulate zoos and aquariums into working with more turtle species in order to keep them in conditions of safety. The priorities are to rescue those turtles that have been procured for illegal trade and organise expeditions to unexplored regions.
