Saying no to closure of Carvoeiro parish council

Dear Editor,

I was really saddened to read that Carvoeiro Junta had been proposed for a merger with the Lagoa Junta in your article in last week’s edition (Parish councils fight closure).

I don’t own a property in the village but have visited it on several occasions since the early 80s. It is my favourite holiday destination ever, where I can truly enjoy the best the Algarve has to offer – Carvoeiro is picturesque, has friendly people and stunning scenery.

My dealings with the Junta happened by chance a few years ago when I was walking into Carvoeiro on the main road one day and saw a drunken man on a bicycle throwing stones at a dog that was barking to protect his home. This was in the morning when the road was busy and the man also presented a danger to other drivers. My first port of call was the Junta. One member of the staff promptly called the GNR who went to the scene (I saw the GNR car drive there!).

The Junta staff spoke to me in perfect English and acted without hesitation, always with a smile.

What a shame if the government decides to get rid of this fantastic service-provider to the community.
